World Refugee Day 2014

World Refugee Day is Friday, June 20th, a date chosen in 2000 by the United Nations to honor “the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homes under threat of persecution, conflict and violence.” Several organizations in Kansas City are planning events to celebrate the day this year.

Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas will host a World Refugee Day Celebration on Saturday, June 14th from 2pm to 6pm, at 2220 Central Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas 66102. The event will include entertainment, food, games, yoga, and recognition of the achievements of refugees in our community. For more information contact Teresa Zaffiro at 785-764-4662 or tzaffiro@catholiccharitiesks.org.

On the following Saturday, June 21st, Jewish Vocational Service and Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center are hosting a free event with food, games, performances, and a soccer exhibition from 11am to 2pm at Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center, 825 Euclid Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64124. For more information, contact Jennifer Conoley at 816-471-2808 ext. 1144 or jconoley@jvskc.org or Martin Okpareke at 816-471-2808 ext. 1117 or mokpareke@jvskc.org.

Every year people across the United States use World Refugee Day as a focus for raising awareness and funds in their own communities to gather support for refugees and, at the same time, spread understanding about the reality of being a refugee.
