Building Content Knowledge and Literacy

Expert evaluator and owner of Center of Effort, LLC, Jeri Levesque, Ed.D., recently sent us the resource Teaching Academic Content and Literacy to English Learners in Elementary and Middle School – a practice guide prepared for the What Works Clearinghouse by Instructional Research Group. It is available in E-book (smartphone, iPad, Nook, and Kindle) and PDF formats. There is also a 77-minute webinar.

The guide makes four recommendations: englishlearnersresource01

  1. intensive, multi-day vocabulary instruction
  2. integration of English instruction in content areas
  3. frequent opportunities to develop writing skills
  4. intervention to small groups of students struggling with literacy and language development issues

It summarizes evidence for each recommendation, provides steps for implementation, and offers activities, exhibits, and sample lesson cycles.

This guide is geared toward teachers, administrators, and other educators who want to improve instruction in academic content and literacy for English learners in elementary and middle school.
